Contemporary
Our Contemporary Program combines technical training with creativity, musicality and individual expression. Through ATOD-based training, students develop strength, flexibility, control, coordination and movement quality while exploring floorwork, dynamics, improvisation and expressive choreography.
Contemporary encourages dancers to move with greater freedom and awareness, helping them connect technique with emotion, intention and artistry. It is especially valuable for students who want to become more versatile and confident performers.
Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) at CAPA
Contemporary dance is constantly evolving and cannot always be defined by a single style or syllabus. At CAPA, we believe this freedom and creativity are an essential part of what makes Contemporary so unique. At the same time, we believe dancers benefit from a strong technical foundation and a clear structure in their training.
By using the Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) Contemporary syllabus as a framework, we are able to guide students through progressive technical development while still giving them the freedom to explore creativity, musical interpretation, movement quality and individual expression. As students progress, they develop greater strength, control, fluidity and awareness of the whole body—building the tools they need to become confident, versatile and expressive dancers.

We value ATOD Contemporary because it balances technique and creativity.
Students develop strength, flexibility, coordination, control and movement quality while also learning to explore space, dynamics, musicality and personal expression.
Rather than focusing only on learning choreography, Contemporary training helps dancers understand how and why they move, encouraging them to become more thoughtful, adaptable and expressive artists.

Contemporary can be a great choice for students who enjoy creativity, music and expressive movement.
It is especially suited to dancers who want to explore movement beyond the structure of classical ballet and develop greater freedom, fluidity and individuality in the way they dance.
Contemporary can benefit both recreational students and those pursuing more serious dance training, particularly students who want to become more versatile performers.
-
Not necessarily. Students can begin Contemporary without extensive experience in another dance style.
However, Ballet and Jazz can provide valuable foundations in alignment, strength, coordination and technique, which can support a dancer's development in Contemporary.
For students who are training more seriously, we often encourage studying multiple styles so that they can develop a broader movement vocabulary and greater versatility.
